7 Steps to Winterize your Home

Here’s our personal checklist on how we prepare  our home to avoid higher energy costs and damage caused by cold weather and snow.

1.Clean Your Gutters:

Cleaning out gutters is at the top of everyone’s list and for good reason. A gutter full of leaves and debris can cause ice dams leading to a roof leak. Leaky gutters can also lead to water seeping under shingles, behind siding and into the foundation, all of which lead to expensive repairs.

2. Change Your Furnace Filter:

Your furnace works hard during the winter, and a clean filter is crucial for its efficiency. A dirty filter can restrict airflow and reduce heating effectiveness. Changing it will ensure your home stays warm and your energy bills stay in check.

3. Service Your HVAC:

Regular maintenance of your heating and cooling system is crucial. Ensure your HVAC system is in good working order by scheduling a professional service visit. It will help avoid unexpected breakdowns during the coldest days of the year.

4. Weatherproof Windows and Doors:

Windows play a significant role in your home's energy efficiency. It’s important to make sure all of the seams and joints are completely sealed. You can fill in irregularly-shaped gaps or missing chunks of weatherstripping with foam tape. Installing a storm door is a tremendous upgrade if you’re trying to protect your doorway from the elements.

5. Protect Your Patio and Deck:

Winter can be harsh on outdoor spaces. Store or cover your outdoor furniture and grills. Consider applying a protective sealant to wooden surfaces to prevent damage from snow and ice.

6. Protect Your Interior Pipes:

Preventing frozen pipes is a top priority in winterizing your home. Insulate pipes in unheated areas, such as the basement or crawl spaces, to prevent freezing and potential bursts. Consider letting faucets drip during extremely cold nights to keep the water moving.

7. Check Your Chimney:

If you have a fireplace or wood-burning stove, have your chimney inspected and cleaned if necessary. A well-maintained chimney will not only keep you safe but also help improve the efficiency of your heating system.
